โI was the sacrifice,โ Capitol Police officer Aquilino Gonell told MSNBCโs ย Deadline White House with Nicole Wallaceย Wednesday. His face was a mask of physical and emotional pain that hurt the hearts of those who watched. โWe were betrayed.โ And what about the other officers
Both Capitol Police and Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Officers went to the House chamber during the vote to create a bipartisan select committee to investigate exactly what happened on January 6. People want to know when the police were tremendously outnumbered why they had to hold off the angry mob for three hours. They called for help over and over and over. No one came.
In a remarkable video compiled from social media, police officer cameras, and the Capitol Building cameras,ย The New York Timesย showed what these dedicated officers went through. One died. Two committee suicide. There were 140 officers injured with everything from being crushed to being beaten with American flag poles to losing fingers and an eye. A woman protester fell and was trampled to death in the frenzy.
Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn was stunned. He said that during the attack, he was called the N-word maybe 15 times. That had never happened to him before. He toldย The Forbes Magazine:
โ[THE COMMITTEE IS GOOD [BUT I] DIDNโT THINK IT WOULD BE THAT CLOSE.โ
There were 190 Republican House lawmakers who voted nay to the select committee. Only Representatives Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) and Liz Cheney (R-WY) voted for it. The final vote approving the committee was 222-190.
D.C. Police Officer Michael Fanone was injured in the January 6โs insurrection. He said:
โI MEAN, IโM ANGRY [ABOUT THE NUMBER OF GOP โNOโ VOTES. I WAS] SHOCKED BUT NOT SURPRISED.โ
Fanone was in the House chamber during the pre-vote debate for โwhat I could stomach.โ He said the Republicansโ negative comments were โthe same old song:โ
โI TRY NOT TO TAKE THESE THINGS PERSONALLY, BUT ITโS VERY PERSONAL FOR ME. I ALMOST LOST MY LIFE THAT DAY. I WATCHED A LOT OF MY FRIENDS ALMOST LOSE THEIR LIVES.โ
Mother of the fallen Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick,ย Gladys Sicknick, said:
โ[I] COULDNโT BELIEVE [SO MANY REPUBLICAN NO VOTES]. I JUST DONโT BELIEVE ANYBODY COULD VOTE NO, IT DOESNโT MAKE SENSE.โ
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy threatened any Republican who joined the select panel that he would take away their committee assignments. Of course, he complained that the committee was partisan. Given the Republicansโ stance, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will appoint all 13 members. Although, she will appoint five in consultation with McCarthy.
Representative Michelle Fischbach (R-MN)ย voted nay against the proposedย independent commission. The Senate Republicans blocked it. She said:
โDEMOCRATS REFUSE TO PUT TOGETHER A TRULY BIPARTISAN COMMISSION.โ
The only Republican to talk to the wounded and grieving was Cheney. Pelosi and Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) escorted the officers, fallen officer Brian Sicknickโs mother, and his partner when they tried to convince House and Senate legislators to investigate the insurrection. The two Democrats also commented on how many โnoโ votes there had been.
The New York Timesput together a remarkable video composite able to show readers how the events unfolded on that terrible day, Day of Rage: An In-Depth Look at How a Mob Stormed the Capitol.ย This video contains language and visuals that may be offensive to some viewers.
The newspaper explained its process:
โA SIX-MONTH TIMES INVESTIGATION HAS SYNCHRONIZED AND MAPPED OUT THOUSANDS OF VIDEOS AND POLICE RADIO COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE JAN. 6 CAPITOL RIOT, PROVIDING THE MOST COMPLETE PICTURE TO DATE OF WHAT HAPPENED โ AND WHY.โ
