Abortion Already in Kansas Constitution Threatened
Kansas is way ahead of most states when it comes to abortion. Not only is it legal, it is in the state Constitution. Except, there is a problem. Kansas is right in the middle of the Great Plains, and we often have Democrat women as our governors such as our sitting Governor Laura Kelly and former Secretary of Health & Human Services Kathleen Sebelius. But that is balanced out with a very conservative legislature. Next week we face a very big problem.
After the Supreme Court struck down a 50-year law, Roe v. Wade, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that contraception was on the chopping block next. A not-so-subtle way to control women, no?
Now Kansans have a wide swath of independent thinkers, and many of us are not too distant from the wagon trains that crossed our rolling hills where I’m from and onto the really flatlands.
When my Grandpa Christie was just a little boy, his mother died. So his dad, all imposing 6’3” of him, packed up all seven kids and headed for her sister’s place in western Kansas about 800 miles away. Traveling by covered wagon.
Our Republican-heavy state legislature decided to sneak in an amendment to the Constitution in the primary elections. The ballot language is intentionally confusing. But all we have to do is VOTE NO. The amendment would “ban or further restrict the procedure,” according to The New York Times. And kill what we have, which is far more suitable for independent Kansas women.
If it should pass, and given the misleading propaganda that passes for political ads it might, then the Republican lawmakers will implement new abortion limits or outlaw it completely. Remember, the Koch brother’s business is located here, and dark money has flooded the state.
After the aggressively conservative Supreme Court obliterated Roe, Courtney Schmitz decided to volunteer “for the first time.” The teacher decided to work at a campaign phone bank. She said
‘I had a sense of duty. I’ve never been so enraged for so long,”
Midwife Melinda Lavon helped put together a vote-no campaign. She said this about Roe:
‘A lot more people were suddenly aware of it.’
Only police states try to control women’s bodies and strangers can hunt down 10-year-old pregnant children for a bounty. The state, any state, knows nothing about medicine and certainly not about women’s bodies.
They do not take into consideration that children as young as eight commonly start their periods now — and can get pregnant or ectopic pregnancies or deaths in the womb.
Independent women of Kansas and of New York all the way to Seattle have our work cut out for us.
