Even my nursing assistants (CNAs aka formerly known as aides) can be agency staff passing like mini hospital ships through the night. Some travel from city to city. But staffing shortages are nothing new.
My Wonderful Sister, Nurse Barbara Christie Mansfield & Nephew.
Several times my sister Barbara Christie Mansfield had to go to her nursing home job with pneumonia. Her CNA came in with a broken pelvis once.
They cared for 60 Alzheimers and otherwise very sick patients. Alone. Why? Because the company wouldn't admit her patients needed as much care at night as during the day. Then it slashed the scheduling staff member in another cost-cutting measure. That left sick employees to replace themselves or to go to work sick.
I've learned that a CNA is my best friend at The Home for Wayward Writers & Others. And she or he is not at at all whom we might have expected. One of mine spoke four languages. Another had a masters degree in counseling. One was a student gaining the right experience along his way to health administration,
It takes so little effort to ask about a CNA's day. Offer a genuine compliment. Remember something about their lives. I write down names, because so many pass through my stay. And truthfully, I'm terrible with names.
One of my favorites had two children. Then along came (surprise) twins. She begged to return to work six weeks after their birth. After all, her maternity benefits did not include pay. She works days while her husband watches their kids. And he takes the vice-versa schedule.
Many people in The Home are in pain or live on the “grouchy” side of Alzheimers. So a CNA's life can be very difficult.
And it is a hard job lifting heavy football-weight patients. CNAs change patients’ briefs, shower status, and the temperatures. Now if only they could change the crushed ball at the top of my femur, life would be close to alright.
Be safe. Be well. You and Yours.
