Well, good Sunday afternoon! Happy Father’s Day to all of you who are dads! And a special bit of warmth for those of you who have lost your fathers. I still miss my dad, Virgil E. Christie 1924-2018. He was 93 years old, but I still wish he was around. He was always there. Just about every day I think of something I want to ask him.
In my family, my mother and Dad mutually agreed that she was smarter than he was. So imagine my surprise at how really very smart he was. When he was 13, he imagined what a plane cockpit should look like, and it was right!
He became a widower when he was 66, and the week after he climbed a 70-foot-tall cedar tree because he needed a line to guide it down when he felled it. He did woodworking from start to finish. Dad even sent me a box full of picture frames, each from a different type of wood.
He picked up and moved to western Kansas when he was in his 70s.
Dad designed two small cars. He made wheelchairs for children in Africa, but didn’t like the design that went with them. So he improved it. He wanted a specific kind of sawmill to cut the boards he made, so he built it.
Dad learned how to do welding. Then, he caught his backyard on fire. And put it out himself. He taught young adults with learning disabilities how to do woodwork until he died. Want to know what his mother put in her biscuits? He knew!
I know that 93 is a good long life. And I know he was ready to go. But I wasn’t really ready to let him go. At least I know what I’m going to look like at 93. I just hope I do not wear that black buffalo-check cap he liked so much!
Enough of that! Let’s laugh!
